joan at camp caseyjoan at camp caseyPrior to the Washington, D.C. rally/concert, Joan spent a week in August in Crawford, Texas, at Camp Casey. Camp Casey was the site of the vigil started by Cindy Sheehan, the mother of U.S. Army Specialist Casey Sheehan, who was killed in action in Iraq on April 4, 2004. Cindy began her vigil while President Bush was on his vacation in Crawford in an effort to get him to speak with her and answer her questions about her son's death and the war. He refused to do so. Joan decided to go to Crawford to support Cindy and all the people who have gathered there. She spent her time there visiting with families of the soldiers who have died, hearing their stories and offering comfort. Joan also shared her own stories of her 40 years of activism and buoyed the spirits of the protesters with her songs.

The photos here were taken by Jeff Paterson, who has documented Cindy Sheehan's vigil in Crawford. You can see more of his images by going here. And you can see even more photos here taken by Susan Knoll, who accompanied Joan to Camp Casey.
